Shift (2022)

This is the public statement about this newly installed sculpture, minutes from my house:

 

"Shift is a work of public art that speaks to our changing attitudes towards the environment, the social and political landscape, and the economy. The sculpture, depicting a fractured world, serves as a call for unity and collective care. Through its use of sustainable materials and simple, powerful forms, encourages reflection on transformation and resilience. Its dynamic, inclusive design invites viewers to consider how collaboration across communities and sectors can shape a more connected future."

My interpretation: In lieu of current our political environment, my first take on this was: The world is so crazy right now, I do not want to see a steel spear cutting our planet in half. Do I need to be reminded of the insanity when seeking an escape to Whole Foods?

Okay, I'll try very hard to turn this around and see the broken world coming together.

Can't we all just get along? 

Is there anything more precious that attending school taught by your 6 year old granddaughter? Especially one who has a clear vision of the curriculum. 

 

 

                     

 

2025 - The Longest and Shortest Year on Record

 I see I've neglected my blog for a year....At one point I felt like this year would never end. And in other ways it feels so short. Will I readily be able to write 2026 or revert to some other decade like 1996?

My year can be summed up in several ways. Two meaningful pieces of art. And one goal I set, not being reached, then trying to pivot. And I'm still trying to pivot...

The House that Wendy & Jeff Built

On January 7, 2025, the Palisades and Altadena fires broke out. My darling friend Wendy lost her home on Chautauqua in the Palisades. Lucky for me, I got to see her home, her home of 28 years that she had remodeled. A home with very personal artwork. A home of cherished memories. This Home Portrait made of fabric and thread, was something I could do that could possibly - I don't know how to say it... Mend their hearts? Bring them joy? I don't know. But bottom line, for me, it was an expression of what a lovely, thoughtful and kind person Wendy is.

Later in the year, my son-in-law's mother showed this Home Portrait to her friend Paula, in Newport, OR.
Paula commissioned me to create a Home Portrait of her very special home in Newport, overlooking the beach and ocean.

It was important to her to include her two pups and two kitties. I kept Paula informed of my progress and she had nothing but enthusiasm and encouragement. She and Todd planned ahead of delivery where to hang the piece. They loved the resulting work.

The one big goal I had set for 2025 was to have an online Art Auction of my L.A. Series*. I had created 10 pieces of art focused on L.A. Landmarks. I had lived in L.A. a total of 45 years and lived in the same house for 32 years, before moving to San Luis Obispo. I thought I had chosen the perfect non-profit to partner with. This was not my first rodeo, i.e. my first online art auction. I had managed several successful auctions with willing partners.

So as I chose my 'perfect' partner and did my pitch, I could see it was not going to be an immediate sell. I circled back several times and nothing came of it. I had put all my eggs in one unwilling basket. Did I pivot? No, I did not. I was stuck. However, I began showing my series to various audiences and did sell one piece of the Griffith Park Observatory. The piece had meaning to the buyer as she used to live in LA and had a view of the Observatory.

So now what? I need to completely finish the series. Perhaps frame a few. Brainstorm more avenues for display and partnering. I'm not sure why or how I got stuck....So brainstorm I will do...I'll reach out to my LA friends and see what input they have...what's the worst that could happen? I'll either get no response, or a bite. Time to pivot.

I won't go into all the heinous events of the year, too many to name. I just know that it's time to pivot. Clean off the proverbial cutting table, shuffle the cards and deal myself a new deck.

*Timing is everything. Today 9/4/26, I successfully completed the auction! I now know what success feels like!

We started the month off with a Moonlight Art Walk of the Hearst Castle in San Simeon, CA
It was a completely different experience than a daytime tour. Loved it!



The grandgirls turned 8 and 5 respectively.
A visit to Legoland and Sea World in San Diego kicked off the festivities.

Summer of 2024

 It's been three years since I posted. To make things simpler, I am going to review this past summer.

We kicked things off with a phenomenal 12 day tour of
the Canadian Rockies. This was taken in Banff National Park
after taking a gondola ride for great views.

One of my favorite shots is of the wildlife crossing bridge in Banff.

And now I can say: I walked on a glacier.

I continued to work on eight pieces showcasing the landmarks
of San Pedro, CA for an online art auction to

benefit the Warner Grand Theater.

I was honored by the Art and Scroll Studio in Alberta, Canada as a

featured artist with a live Zoom interview.

A highlight: Teaching Gemma to sew on my tiny Janome.
She loved it!

August 19th, Leon recovered beautifully from outpatient neck surgery
for cervical stenosis. He continues to improve so well!

December 2020

The joy of two precious, loving granddaughters.

This makes the pandemic and quarantine bearable.

The delight of watching them grow and develop into loving
humans is hard to describe.

Gemma knows how to smile for the camera.

Sage looks so relaxed at the wheel.

 

A Virtual Thanksgiving

 

Well, I pulled out the Thanksgiving decor, even added a few new pieces.

No one around the table.

I can't even remember what we ate, but it was not traditional.

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was so disappointing and no fun.

The Dog Show did spark some joy, but no fun since Danny was not here to watch it with me.

But, next year, I believe we will be all together.
